The most retarded ‘serious’ journalism ever

Posted in och aye the news, stupidity, things of all time on June 29th, 2010 by RevStu

Can be found here.

I wouldn't call myself a fan of the Daily Telegraph by some way, but I've never seen it sink quite this low. And I speak as someone who doesn't give a donkey's danglers about global warming.

The apps they want to rob you blind for

Posted in games, iOS on June 26th, 2010 by RevStu

Alert viewers will of course remember the WoSblog piece from a couple of weeks back in which I detailed how to set yourself up a US App Store account in order to get hold of stuff that isn't available here.

Today there's another example of why having multinational accounts is a good thing. The just-released PES 2010 in the UK: £5.99. Price in the USA: £1.19. You'll have to ask Konami why.

Getting it right

The punchily-titled You Cruise by Mazda MX-5 is a great little racing game that reminds me a bit of the early Colin McRae Rally titles on the Playstation.

It's pretty limited (no other cars, just time trials on eight tracks with online leaderboards), but that's okay because it's free, and what it does it does really well. The odd thing, though, is the fact that it has better controls than any other traditional-style racing game in the App Store.

A glimpse into my world

Posted in misc on June 25th, 2010 by RevStu

I've been getting this sort of thing for almost 20 years now. I barely even notice it any more. But it's kind of interesting, a bit.

Note: this is only the tip of the iceberg.

Shut up, cretins everywhere

Posted in football, stupidity on June 20th, 2010 by RevStu

Point 1: Kaka clearly, obviously, makes an active short jabbing motion with his elbow towards Keita's chest.

Watch the video by clicking the pic above and then clicking the "RED CARD" clip, particularly from 0.36 to 0.38. Watch Kaka's arm. I think the mistake people have been making so far is to watch the footage with their eyes closed and their brains replaced with a turnip.

The love that dare not speak its name

Posted in bargains, iOS, WoS retro on June 20th, 2010 by RevStu

Cinematronics' 1983 laserdisc coin-op Dragon's Lair (on sale at the time of writing for an unspecified period in the App Store for 59p, down from £2.99) is the most successful videogame in the history of the world that nobody will admit to liking.

For over 20 years, Dragon's Lair games have been coining in cash hand over fist, while drawing nothing but sneering bile from press, critics and "hardcore" gamers. And they're all wrong.

iPod freebie: Skullpogo

Posted in free stuff, games, iOS on June 19th, 2010 by RevStu

Here's a cutie.

Skullpogo is a perfect example of how to make a good iPod game. It's short, shallow(ish) and sweet, it's designed for the characteristics of the format, and it's endlessly replayable. And today, it's free.

Why metagaming is the only true gaming

Posted in games, iOS on June 19th, 2010 by RevStu

Anyone who's been reading WoS or WoSblog for any amount of time will probably already have noticed that I have very little time for videogames that want to tell stories.

There are plenty of fields of culture available already for people who want to be told stories. Books, films, comics, TV,  theatre and even music are all ideally suited to story-telling, and frequently do a brilliant job of it. You wouldn't hire a footballer to come round and do your plumbing, so why would you look to videogames for storytelling?

iPod freebie: Hellkid

This one guzzled an entire battery charge this morning.

Basically Canabalt meets Hook Champ, Hellkid: Hook & Jump is a really nicely put-together stab at the "running man" genre.

Frankly I'm astonished this bet is still available, so get in quick.

The Art Of J Nash

Posted in awesomeness, remember Spangles? on June 17th, 2010 by RevStu

Chatting to a chum yesterday, something they said gave me cause to recall a feature from Amiga Power in which former full-time members of the AP team recounted their experiences on leaving the mag for the "real" world.

Sadly the issue in question (AP54, October 1995) is one of those that still hasn't been scanned for the Amiga Magazine Rack, and only a fragment of it is available in the WoS Archive, so I had to go and get the actual magazine off my shelves, like some sort of caveman.
