I should point out in the interests of pedantry that the internet did indeed exist in AP days and had in fact existed since the late 60s. The World Wide Web is another matter.

Well, that's why I qualified the comment with "essentially". It existed, but not in any mainstream sense. Even email was only just becoming popular by the time I left AP, and 14.4 modems were still quite cutting-edge.

I hasten to add, also in the spirit of pedantry, that the Internet did not exist until the mid-to-late '80s, and that whilst ARPAnet is most certainly the Grandfather of the Internet and that you're absolutely right that it had been around since the '60s inter-networking stuff together, it wasn't the Internet, but instead a different thing which pre-dates the internet.
Much as the Stooges weren't the first Punk band.
