Incredibly new!

iCut Deluxe (free today) is actually a pretty spiffy little puzzle game.

I'm just not sure their media cuttings are doing them a lot of favours.

Or Why Videogame Programmers Hate You, Part 956.

Appropriately enough, with Easter coming up, it turns out that resurrection is a lot easier than you think.

Unmissablest freebie of the day

Posted in free stuff, games, iOS on April 10th, 2011 by RevStu

Is Run Like Hell! Deluxe, probably the finest and almost certainly the most content-stuffed running-man game in the App Store.

Whether your taste is for being pursued by starving cannibals or love-crazed hotties (but only those two things), there's lots of fun for you here.

(This recommendation brought to you by Free-App Hero. Natch.)

iOS freebie of the day

Is this extremely zippy line-drawing, trampoline-jumping game with beautiful graphics and almost limitless replay value.

Rather charmingly, it's called A Moon For The Sky. (There's a separate but equally free iPad version, A Moon For The Sky HD, too.)

Those crazy Far East kids really do have trouble with that one, don't they?

Take it away, ActionPig!

"With frequent touches on your screen, you will bring the
pig and the farmer to scream."

Er, thanks, ActionPig.

Or a terrible warning from the future? I can't be sure.

In either event, it's probably too late for me now.

Pretty darn fronty

Still missing Elite after all these years? Want to play an Elite-style game skewed a bit more towards fighting but still with trading and levelling up and stuff? Preferably one that looks stunning (especially on a Retina display), controls really nicely, but (temporarily) costs absolutely nothing?

Man! What were the odds?

You should want this

Posted in free stuff, games, iOS on February 24th, 2011 by RevStu

Not least because it's called "Rise Of The Robot Dogs". But mostly because it's great, and it looks a lot better moving than it does in stills. Although if you look at this still and don't want to play the game immediately, you're weird in the head and probably love Hitler.

It's free today, you can get it here, and at the time of writing I have the world high-score. DEFEAT ME IF YOU CAN AND DARE.

How not to design a videogame

Posted in free stuff, games, idiots, iOS on February 22nd, 2011 by RevStu

My Twitter feed has been picking up a lot of indie-coder followers recently. This review is intended purely as a service for them (and for anyone thinking of becoming one), because it contains several quite spectacular object lessons in how to get almost everything about videogame design disastrously wrong and totally ruin what could otherwise have been a really nice game.

Its name is Helmet Hero, and it's not because the developer is a complete and utter hero, if you get what I'm saying.

War has never been so much (nude) fun

Posted in free stuff, games on January 23rd, 2011 by RevStu

The Pickford Brothers' turn-based two-player strategy game Naked War is now completely free to download and play. (Previously, if I remember rightly, it was free to download but you had to pay for moves.)

I love turn-based strategy (I've been dying for a good email TBS since Hasbro shut off the Email X-Com servers, the despicable cunts) but I absolutely loathe subscription-based or pay-per-play games (outside of an arcade), so I never actually got round to giving Naked War a try. In the light of this splendid development, I plan to put that right very soon.

Or "Games which are hopelessly flawed, but still entertaining in a slightly rubbish sort of way as long as you didn't have to spend any money on them".

Today's temporarily-tolerated title: Chop Chop Soccer.

Don’t miss this one

Posted in free stuff, games, iOS on January 12th, 2011 by RevStu

It's the finest action puzzler I've yet seen for the iThings, and it's free today.

It's Push Panic! I'd say more, but I have to go and play it again right now. Trust me, 30 seconds in you'll know what I'm talking 'bout Willis.

Edge edge edge edge edge

Posted in edge, free stuff, games, iOS, iPad on January 4th, 2011 by RevStu

Poor old Tim Langdell, eh? Anyway, to celebrate the ending of the beard-faced idiot's decade of spurious legal bullying, EA have rather kindly made the modestly splendid Mirror's Edge free today.

Basically a rather neato old-skool platformer with ultra-pretty graphics, the game normally costs £2.99 on iPhone/iPod and £5.99 on iPad, but for lucky European gamers (and some other territories too, but NOT the USA) those prices have been reduced by £2.99 and £5.99 respectively.

WoSblog Game Of The Year 2011

Posted in free stuff, games, iOS on January 2nd, 2011 by RevStu

(So far, obviously.)

I Must Run! (currently free for some reason) isn't actually a sequel to Canabalt, but it might as well be. It takes the gameplay of the original and expands on it without overloading it with new features, and it's a heap o'fun.
