The greatest word ever written

Posted in awesomeness, things of all time on July 11th, 2011 by RevStu

There are lots of great writers. Even within the professional community, let alone the general public, you'll have a hard time getting two people to agree on who was the best ever. Shakespeare? Orwell? Joyce? Sega Zone-era Jonathan Davies? The arguments echo timelessly through the ages.

I've got many heroes and inspirations of my own – Steven Wells, Miranda Sawyer, Barbara Ellen, Craig Kubey, Rosie Boycott, Douglas Adams and plenty more. (Including the fictional composite entity Lloyd Mangram.) But the greatest writer of all time is someone whose name I don't even know, and who to earn the accolade only had to write a single word.

The worst videogame ever made

Posted in games, things of all time on February 10th, 2011 by RevStu

Ask a thousand people what the best videogame of all time is and you'll only get back a tiny handful of names (including variants thereof) – Super Mario, Half-Life, Grand Theft Auto, Call Of Duty, Naughty Ones, all the usual suspects. But ask the same thousand people what the worst game ever is and you'll get a thousand different answers.

It's time someone stood up and made a decision.

A global injustice

Posted in football, things of all time on January 12th, 2011 by RevStu

This frankly incredible piece of clearly deliberate skill from Matty Burrows of Glentoran, astonishingly, did NOT win the World Goal Of The Year 2010 prize at the FIFA Ballon d'Or awards ceremony on Monday night:

When I explained this startling fact to a popular cultural commentator, his instant and heartfelt response was "What's that all about, eh?"

(In fairness, he also said that when I asked him how many sugars he wanted in his tea, and who the current President of the USA was.)

The best thing to ever happen to gaming

And possibly the entire internet. And most assuredly the only time I'll ever say anything like that relating in any way to World Of Warcraft.

The most retarded ‘serious’ journalism ever

Can be found here.

I wouldn't call myself a fan of the Daily Telegraph by some way, but I've never seen it sink quite this low. And I speak as someone who doesn't give a donkey's danglers about global warming.

International Deathchase Day

Posted in games, things of all time on April 2nd, 2010 by RevStu

For one of the greatest games ever made, Mervyn Estcourt's 1983 Spectrum classic Deathchase (often inaccurately called "3D Deathchase") still doesn't get appreciated enough for my liking.

Mr Estcourt isn't a knight of the realm, there's no blue plaque on the wall of the house where he was born, and there isn't even a statue of an armed motorcyclist on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square.

In the absence of any such formal commemoration, then, WoSblog has decided that in order to mark the 27th anniversary of the game's release, from this date forward April 2nd shall be International Deathchase Day.

The least appropriate use of ‘Finally’ ever

Posted in games, iOS, things of all time on March 3rd, 2010 by RevStu

Is this okay, or really really not very okay at all? I just can't tell.

"Finally a SNIPER game where you play as a soviet soldier to help liberate the Auschwitz Nazi concentration camp!"

The greatest game review of all time

Posted in games, things of all time on March 2nd, 2010 by RevStu

Earlier this week I directed a friend of mine, online poker impresario Matt "Mango Fish" Dale, to the splendid Squid Yes! Not So Octopus! on XBLA (where it sells for the kerrayzee bargain price of 61p), and he bought a copy.

While I don't exactly fully agree with his feelings about the game, which he shared with me via MSN the next day, I do quite genuinely feel that his comments on it constitute possibly the best videogame review there's ever been (and one of the most objectively accurate), so I've posted them in their entirety below the jump for WoSblog viewers to enjoy and debate.

The worst videogame level of all time

Is, I've today concluded after 33 years of videogaming, this one.

Arkanoid 2 - Revenge Of Doh (arcade)

But hey, don't take my word for it – you can give it a shot for yourself.
